I am using 2010.2. I write lots of program code, and that means tons and tons of semicolons. Is there a way to make NVDA say "semicolon" instead of "semi" for that character. This semi thing is driving me crazy! This could be extended to the exclamation point being expressed as "bang" for some strange reason, apostrophe as "tick". Also is there a way to stop saying of row and column numbers in tables in internet explorer? Thanks in advance. I'd like to be using NVDA instead of JAWS if possible.
One other thing: is there a way to wrap arround when using navigation quick keys on the internet. Also, this site seems to be a big long link. When I arrow down, nvda says "link" for each line.
That's because NVDA reads webpages as they are supposed to be written. If you were to look at the site visually, all the links at the top where it shows all the usernames who are logged in are in one line. Most websites are like that, they aren't in a list sort of thing like with jaws. Jaws and NVDA render the pages differently. Also, why does it matter wheat NVDA says for a semicolon? Just curious.
I'm just used to hearing that, but that's all right. Is there a way to make NVDA render the pages differently, or will I have to get used to the link thing?
Insirt V turns screen layout on and off.
It's a toggle so make sure you save your configuration settings if you want the changes to stick.
As for the apostrophe, you can simply fix that with the dictionary.
I don't bother with it because NVDA actually pronounces the different types of apostrophe differently, to give you an idea, there is the plain ' and then you've got the ’.
It also depends on the synthesizer you use and another way to tell is by pressing numpad 2 twice quickly.
Nvda's not the only reader that says "bang!" for there exclamations
Window eyes has it as well.
As for screen layout, I used to be like you wanting line by line text.
But... I find everything's a lot faster when you use screen layout.
For table and other things.
read the user guide.
I know I'm being harsh, but Jesus there is a manual for a reason and for the final time..
nvda is not jaws!
Sorry just had to get that out of my system.
As for the rapping of navigation, nope.
Shift plus navigation keys.
I know that nvda is not JAWS, and in many ways I like it better, but I just find it weird that this whole site seems to be a huge link. Thanks for all your help.
Well, that's how it looks to the sighted.
I use the same version of NVDA, with Firefox, and I'm not sure you mean about the pages looking like one link. I tried this site with screen layout on and off and it didn't change a thing. Also, that second apostrophe didn't read as anything, either in the sentence or when I tried to go character by character. I always have my ESpeak set to Greek but it did the same thing when I put it on English. I've noticed the tick and semi as well. The latter doesn't bother me but the tick does. Still, when I've tried to change it in the dictionary, it didn't work. It says apostrophe in the word (I apostrophe ve" for example but still "tick" when I write it.
I'll do firefox then. Yep. Itapostrophes really weird when it pronounces things like that. I'll just have to get used to it. Actually, if they ever make an application-specific dictionary, I could set semi to semicolon only in word pad, where I do all my code writing.
Don't know if NVDA has a keyboard dictionary like window-Eyes but that is where you would want to change the name of the key if you want it to say something different when pressed. I would imagine there are two dictionaries one for the actual key name and one for the what the screen reader sees on the screen. Just a thought.
